"As the World Turns"

DO YOU LIKE YOUR CHARACTER [John Dixon]?
He's okay. Yeah, I like him; he's fun. It's a challenge to get by the writing.

WHAT TYPE OF PERSON DO YOU THINK YOUR CHARACTER REPRESENTS TO THE AUDIENCE?
Probably the worst person in the world! He's, to them, evidently, evil incarnate. And that's what they would like him to be...they would like a one-dimensional, black cape, black mustache, melodramatic, hysterical villain. I play a person. I don't play a one-dimensional type of person. They hired me to do a job and I do what I have to do. I don't agree, most of the time, with what they think. It's as simple as that.

WHY DO YOU THINK ATWT HAS REMAINED SO POPULAR?
Well, I have a lot of theories about that, but it changes. I think we are very traditional...we never do anything that makes anybody feel uncomfortable. That's one of the reasons. Also, we've been around a long time. We've built up quite a following. I really don't know. I remember one of the best pieces of advice, when I first came on the show...Don MacLaughlin said, 'Now you just go very slow; we don't raise our voices. It's just very easy, the whole thing.' It's not that way so much anymore. Thank goodness. Also, everybody is so good on this show. They're just aces; the best of friends. There are only about three of us [characters] who get into any trouble. And those three can throw all the rest of them. But you need those people. You can't have an hour of good people.

DO YOU EVER WATCH THE COMPETITION?
No, I never do. I don't know, I constantly hear that our ratings are very good. We're number one or something like that. Then I hear other shows say that they're number one. That doesn't interest me at all. My job is not to sell soap at all. Competition is silly. It is the worst thing in the world. It should not be introduced into this. Unfortunately, that's all it is-- competition. If somebody I know is doing something elsewhere, I'll watch that...I'll watch their work.

IF YOU COULD SAY ANYTHING TO YOUR FANS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
I would say, don't be deceived. That seems to be it. I get a little bit of fan mail-- not as much as some people, but I get some. I get some very nice fan mail. I also get some hate stuff... .
